The Importance of a Gynaecology Specialist

Specialism is equally vital when it comes to gynaecology. Take it from me as an experienced gynaecological surgeon; it is incredibly complicated to pelvic anatomy, physiology, and pathology of a woman. While a general gynaecologist can address many of the daily issues, it is better to consult with an expert for many conditions. A gynaecologist oncologist will be the best person to treat you to get the best cancer treatment. Similarly, a fertility specialist should provide you with the insight and experience you need when it comes to infertility treatment. Specialization is especially important for highly technical procedures such as minimally invasive surgery and endometriosis treatment, it is the only way to become truly adeptand accomplished.
The truth is, in one person's career there is simply no time to become skilled in all fields. By focusing on a specific sub-specialty, a surgeon can develop their technique, improve their surgical skills and keep up-to-date with the latest research. Certainly learning as a surgeon does not stop at the point of becoming a consultant. It is a constant evolution and development process, the professional will only improve as they gain experience in their specialist interest area.
Practice really makes it perfect, or as close as possible to perfect. The number of specific procedures performed by a surgeon is critical to becoming an expert in their field. This is laparoscopic surgery and endometriosis treatment for me. You wouldn't want your facelift or plastic surgeon to replace your hip with a bowel surgeon. Similarly, choosing a gynaecological surgeon who has chosen to focus on your condition and dedicated their career to treating it is important.  Every patient I see or work on is adding to my understanding, sharpening my skills and making me a better surgeon.
It is power that is knowledge. Find out what your condition is, and then find a specialist dealing with that condition extensively.  As a patient, the most important thing is to do your own investigation.  So, talk to support groups, search the web and don't be afraid to ask questions. It's not always right for doctors.
